WOODLAWN - Woodlawn blanked the Junction City Dragons 12-0 in five innings last Friday as the Bears wrapped up an undefeated 8-2A conference season to win the school's third consecutive conference championship and its 35th overall. The Bears will now take their 24-3 record into the Class 2A South Region Tournament this Thursday, May 4, at Horatio as Woodlawn attempts to win its third consecutive state title and the school's ninth overall.
Woodlawn is scheduled to play the 14-6 Spring Hill Bears, the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A conference, at 10 a.m. Thursday. A victory would assure Woodlawn of a bid to the Class 2A State Tournament to be held May 11-13 at Greenland.
Thursday's winner will face the winner between the 7-2A's no. 2 seed, Murfreesboro, and the 8-2A's no. 3 seed, Parkers Chapel, in the regional semifinals at noon Friday, May 5.
Woodlawn knocked off Spring Hill, 10-5, in a non-conference game played April 11 at Woodlawn.
The Bears enter post-season play on a 13-game win streak having lost their last game to Class 5A Mountain Home, 13-2, on March 23.
Woodlawn made quick work of Junction City in its regular season finale at home last Friday.
Dylan Butler's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the first gave the Bears a quick 3-0 lead. Garrett Weatherford added a run with an RBI single in the second, and a two-out double by Austin Howard followed by a single from Tate Hall in the third made it 6-0.
Woolawn invoked the 10-run rule by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bears' first five batters reached base: Brayden Jones was hit by a pitch and Weatheford singled before the next three - Owen Stover, Jayden Wilmoth and Butler - all walked. Jones scored on a passed ball and Weatherford scored on a bases-loaded walk.
