Rison's Juneteenth Celebration

RISON - Those attending the Rison Juneteenth Celebration held Saturday at Powell Park in Rison listen to Detroit Johnny (left on stage) and his blues group from Pine Bluff perform during the afternoon. Andrew Roshell, one of the organizers of the event, said visitors from Gary, Ind.; Flint, Mich.; and Milwaukee, Wisc. were attendance for the event that celebrates June 19, 1865, the date that slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned they were freed through the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln about two years before. Roshell said the New Life Baptist Church Choir performed earlier in the day and there was also a guest speaker. Other festivities at Powell Park included vendors, food trucks and the Mud Dogs ATV group. Correction: In a front page photo of last week’s June 21, 2023 printed issue of The Herald, the church for the choir performing at the Juneteenth Celebration in Rison was misidentified.
