Kingsland Council Approves Street Closures Petition for Store Site

KINGSLAND - The Kingsland City Council formally accepted a petition during a special meeting Tuesday night to close certain unpaved streets and alleys that cross the land where a new Dollar General store will be built. This was the latest hurdle that had to be met in order for the property sale to move forward, Kingsland Mayor Sharon Crosby explained to the three council members gathered for the meeting. Council members Lee Penister, Sandra Laws and Karen Wiscaver unanimously approved the motion. Charlie Montgomery of Montgomery Southern Development of Greenwood, Miss., told the council that a city plat made decades ago included some streets and alleys that cross the land along the southwest comer of Hwy. 79 and Hwy. 189 (First Street) where the new store will be located. While the streets and alleys were on the plat, they were never paved. Montgomery said he is an independent real estate agent working on behalf of Pine Belt Development, which is a group that buys land and builds the stores for Dollar General throughout the region. Montgomery has been overseeing the land transaction for the new Kingsland store since late last year. Pine Belt originally had planned to build the store along on property just west of the Hwy. 189 intersection along Hwy. 79. That property belongs the Stamper family. However, Montgomery said the Arkansas Highway Department would not allow the store to have a Hwy. 79 access there due to its nearby proximity to the Old Hwy. 79 intersection. To solve the problem, Pine Belt is buying an adjoining 1.1 (see CLOSURE page 8) (continued from page 1) acres from the Cleveland County School District that was part of the Kingsland School campus.
