RISON - Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer with the new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is invited to attend at meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Hall-Morgan Veterans Building, 404 Sycamore Street across from the courthouse in Rison.
Rick Beckner, one of the CERT organizers, said this will be an informational meeting with handouts explaining what CERT is and how the information/ education can strengthen communities as well as how to get started.
CERT training classes can be either online or in a classroom setting. The class content includes basic first aid, bleeding control, proper tourniquet use, basic patient assessment, scene safety, hazardous material identification, proper search and rescue techniques, and even assessment.
Beckner said they will add basic CPR, stroke awareness, and for those interested, civilian radio basics.
Content is appropriate for high school age and older. This program is not intended to education anyone to the level of emergency medical technician (EMT) but to make communities strong by assisting at a basic level until professional assistance arrives. Training also includes proper search and rescue techniques to keep rescuers safe in a disaster situation.
