RISON - The Cleveland County Historical Society will meet on August 17 at 10 a.m. at the Roy and Christine Sturgis Library of Cleveland County in Rison. This is a change in meeting time.
Those attending will get a sneak peek at a memorial quilt being donated back to the County by a descendant of the Ryburn and Hamilton Families. The quilt which contains the names of over 900 Cleveland County (and some Jefferson County) World War II servicemen and women was made by a Cleveland County Home Demonstration Club or sewing circle in 1944 and was raffled to buy war bonds to help with the war effort. A member of the sewing group, Artie Elizabeth Hamilton Ryburn, (25 Nov 1890 21 Jan 1978) who lived in the Mt. Carmel Community, won the quilt. See Volume I of CLEVELAND COUNTY ARKANSAS, Our History and Heritage (2006) for information on the Hamilton and Ryburn Families and World War II Veterans of Cleveland County Arkansas for a brief history of many of the Cleveland County WWII Veterans (2008).
The quilt will be formally presented to the County at a Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday, November 11, 2023. It will be on permanent display in the Cleveland County Courthouse after the ceremony.
Anyone interested in the history of Cleveland County or in their own family history is invited to attend the CCHS meetings and to become a member and presenter. We welcome any Cleveland County family history or genealogy that you can share with us.
