Jr. Bears Blow Past Guy-Perkins

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn scored on its first four possessions as the Junior Bears overpowered the first-year Guy-Perkins Junior Thunderbirds, 40-16, in a non-conference game last Friday afternoon at the Carl Jones Sports Complex. Woodlawn took command early, going 73 yards in four plays before freshman quarterback Parker Arnold scored on a 19-yard scamper with 4:08 left in the opening period. Arnold trotted in for the two-pointer to make it 8-0. Lucas Manes took the first snap of the Junior Bears’ next possesision 40 yards for a touchdown to make 16-0 with 2:17 left in the first quarter. Arnold ran in the two-pointer. Guy-Perkins would answer on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 55 yards for a score with 1:38 left in the first. The conversion run was good to make it 16-8. Arnold had a big kick return on the ensuring kickoff that was wiped out by a blindside block, but he made up for it by burning the Junior T-Birds for an 85-yard touchdown run on the next play. Fullback Ethan White bulled in the two-point attempt to make ti 24-8 with 1:00 left in the first. After forcing another punt, the Junior Bears marched 63 yards in four plays before Colton Simmons ended the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run. Arnold again tacked on the conversion run to make it 32-8 with 4:40 left in the second quarter. Coach Zach Meyer let his first string operate the first series of the second half as White’s 10-yard run capped a 51-yard drive in four plays. White also powered in for the two-point try to make it 40-8. Meyer began to make liberal substitutions at that point, putting in several of his seventh graders. Guy-Perkins’ final score came on  10-yard run with 2:12 left in the game to finish off a 13-play, 70-yard drive by the Junior Thunderbirds. The conversion attempt was good to make the final 40-16.
