LITTLE ROCK Both of Cleveland County's state representatives, District 96 State Rep. Sonia Barker (R-Smackover) and District 93 State Rep. Mike Holcomb (R-Pine Bluff), were presented with the Family Council Action Committee's 2023 Statesman Award.
Barker's legislative district includes roughly the western side of Cleveland County. She represents Rison, Kingsland and New Edinburg in the Arkansas in the Arkansas House of Representatives. Overall, her district includes portions of Union, Ouachita, Calhoun, Bradley, Dallas, and Cleveland Counties.
Holcomb's district covers portions of northern and eastern Cleveland County, including the Bowman Township area as well as the Randall, Woodlawn, Calmer, Pansy and Rye communities along Hwy. 63. Overall, his district includes portions of portion of Jefferson, Cleveland, Lincoln, and Drew Counties. Barker and Holcomb both re-ceived the award for earning an "A" on the 2023 Family Council Action Committee legislative report card. Recipients of this award are recognized for their votes during the 94th General Assembly on the 25 bills scored in the report card. According to the group's website, the Family Council is a conservative education and research organization based in Little Rock. Its mission is to promote, protect and strengthen traditional family values found and reflected in the Bible by impacting public opinion and public policy in Arkansas.
Luke McCoy, development and communications director of Family Council, presented the award to Barker while Jerry Cox, president of the Family Council, presented it to Holcomb in separate ceremonies last week at the state capitol in LittleRock last week. "Legislators cast hundreds of votes at the State Capitol," said McCoy, "and their hard work, good votes, and dedication to Christian family values often go unseen.
