WOODLAWN - The no. 3 playoff seed for the eight-man South Conference will be determined Friday night when the Woodlawn Bears host the Spring Hill Bears at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
The junior high teams are scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m. In addition, Woodlawn High School will be recognizing the 50th anniversary of the football program with a special reception for all former players at 5 p.m. inside the testing center at the high school.
Woodlawn and Spring Hill both enter the game with 3-2 marks in conference play. Spring is 6-3 overall while Woodlawn is 5-3. Both teams have suffered league losses to the same two teams: Spring Hill lost at home to Strong, 18-14, and to Mountain Pine on the road, 24-18; Woodlawn fell at Strong, 48-20, and at Mountain Pine, 26-22.
This is the second consecutive season that a playoff seed has been at stake when these two teams have met for the regular season finale. Last year, Woodlawn knocked off Spring Hill, 34-14, on the road to earn the no. 2 seed from the South Conference.
The top two seeds for the South Conference have already been determined with Strong winning the league title and Mountain Pine finishing second. Whoever wins Friday night will be the no. 3 seed and will travel to Brinkley, which is the no.2 seed from the north, for a first round of the playoff game on Nov. 10. The loser will be the no. 4 seed and will travel to Rector to face the North Conference champions and the current no. 1ranked team in Class 2A eightman football.
Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said Spring Hill will be a challenge for his Bears. Like Woodlawn, Spring Hill takes a physical approach to the game and has a run-oriented offense that mixes in the pass. Spring Hill has also installed more option into its run game this year that will test Woodlawn's discipline on defense. When the Bears do throw it, Spring Hill likes to go deep, often to the tightend.
