Contested Races Emerge For Two Justice Districts

RISON - Voters in justice of the peace Districts 7 and 8 will be deciding who will represent them on the nine-member Cleveland County Quorum Court when they go to the polls for the Republican primary election on March 5, 2024. With the filing period for the 2024 election coming to a close Tuesday, incumbent District 7 Justice of the Peace Bruce Brown of Pansy is once again being challenged by Donald Mull of Herbine in the Republican primary. There are no other candidates in the race so it will be a winner-take-all situation for whoever comes out on top. The District 7 JP race will be a rematch of the 2022 election when Brown held off Mull by just a three-vote margin, 84-81. District 7 includes roughly the Pansy and Herbine communities. Meanwhile, current District 8 Justice of the Peace Johnie Brewster of the Macedonia community south of Rison did not file for another two-year term on the quorum court. Two Republican candidates, Jeffrey Smith and Corey Keaton, did file for the seat. Whoever wins the primary election will take the position since no other candidates are on the ballot. District 8 extends roughly along Hwy. 35 south of Rison to past the Macedonia community. Only those residents living within the District 7 or District 8 are eligible to vote in those races. This year's filing period for candidates wishing to run in the 2024 general election was from noon Monday, Nov. 6, to noon Tuesday, Nov. 14.
