World War II which officially began for the United States with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, took the lives and wounded many others of our service men and women. The Service Men's Quilt, recently hung in the Cleveland County Courthouse, and the accompanying booklet, The Service Men's Quilt, Cleveland County, Arkansas, World War II, serve as a memorial to those from Cleveland County who gave their all and to all whose lives were disrupted and forever changed.
The quilt, made in 1944 by Cleveland County Home Demonstration Clubs, was raffled to purchase War Bonds to help with the war effort. Names of many Cleveland County men and women who served in WWII are embroidered on the quilt and are featured in the booklet. Those who may have enlisted after 1944 or for some other reason did not have their names on the quilt are listed separately in the booklet which contains over 2000 names of those who served during WWII from Cleveland County. Even though it is labeled Service Men's Quilt, it also contains the names of the Cleveland County women who served in WWII.
The Cleveland County Extension Homemakers, represented by Karen Bell Fox and the Cleveland County Historical Society, represented by Annette Rawls, extend a big THANK YOU to ALL who have contributed to the recent hanging of the World War II Service Men's Quilt in the Cleveland County Courthouse on Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.
