RISON - From a new superintendent taking over for the Cleveland County School District to record-breaking attendance at the Rison in the Fall Festival, there were some big stories over the final six months of 2023. Here is a look at some of the headlines from July through December 2023:

Jerrod Williams said his top priority as superintendent of the Cleveland County School District is make sure there is still a school district around after he is gone. Williams, who officially took over on July 1 after former Superintendent Craig Dupuy resigned to become an assistant superintendent with the Benton School District, said creating sound financial policy that keeps on an eye on the bottom line will be his primary focus. He also said he intends to come up with some proposals to address the district's facility needs.
The Jason and Debbie Young family of Rye is named the 2023 Cleveland County Farm Family of the Year. The Youngs operate eight broiler and maintain more than 200 acres that includes pasture and hay fields to maintain their herd of cattle.
Sheriff Jack Rodgers told the Cleveland County Quorum Court he may have to close the county jail unless some much needed repairs are made. In response, the quorum court allotted him $50,000 to hire DLS Detention Services of San Antonio, Texas, to inspect the jail and make whatever repairs can be made during the inspection.
The Cleveland County Quorum Court, the Rison City Council and the Kingsland City Council all approved ordinances placing noise limitations and other restrictions on data mining centers that might come to the county or city.
