10 YEARS AGOMAY 11, 2016After nearly two hours of discussion, the Woodlawn School Board voted Monday night to spend $250,000 from the district's building fund and use a $250,000 low-interest loan to build a new library and renovate the old library into an all-sports weight room/training complex.The board of the Cleveland County School District voted to spend up to $20,000 to rebuild the visitors' side bleachers inside the Rison High School gymnasium. The plan calls for "boxing in" the visitors' side bleachers to replace the 45-year-old fold-out type bleachers that can be pushed back into the wall. The "boxed in" bleachers will have no openings like the fold-out type did.A retirement reception recognized former Rison police chief Jeff Prescott, 33 years overall with the department, and Sgt. Greg Herron, 20 years of service, from the Rison Police Department.The Woodlawn Bears and the Rison Lady Wildcats both advanced to the Class 2A State Baseball and Softball Tournaments. Woodlawn won its first regional championship since 2010, while Rison finished fourth at the regional tourney to advance.20 YEARS AGOMAY 17, 2006It looks as though Cleveland County will indeed be using the new computerized voting machines in Tuesday's primary election. Earlier in the month it was questionable whether the new electronic voting machines would be completely ready for the election. This will be the first time for the county to use voting machines instead of paper ballots. The only county-wide contested race facing voters in Tuesday's election is for county judge. The candidates are Judge Vernon Dollar, the incumbent, Bobby Hyatt and Gary Spears.Woodlawn school officials decided Monday night to put a proposed elementary physical education building on hold, as attempts will be made to cut costs for the project.
