Bears Can Clinch 8-2A Thursday

PARKERS CHAPEL - After beating the Parkers Chapel Trojans 13-1 on Tuesday, the Woodlawn Bears can clinch the 8-2A regular season title Thursday with a win over the Hampton Bulldogs at home. Game details of the Bears’ win at Parkers Chapel were not available at press time.The Bears improved to18-6 overall and 6-1 in conference with the win. As of Wednesday, Junction City also has just one league loss but Woodlawn won the head-to-head matchup and therefore owns the tiebreaker.The worse that Woodlawn can finish is second, which gives it a bye to the 8-2A District Tournament semifinals next week and an automatic bid to the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament at Murfreesboro.Woodlawn 10, Poyen 3WOODLAWN - Woodlawn used a five-run second inning to take control early as the Bears cruised to a 10-3 win over the Poyen Indians Friday in 8-2A conference action at Woodlawn.Parker Arnold’s ground out in the bottom of the first gave Woodlawn a 1-0 lead before the Bears stretched it out in the second.Logan Clark singled to start the second before Gavin Edmonds doubled to allow Clark’s courtesy runner, Mark Adams, beat the throw home to make it 2-0. Edmonds moved to third on that play and then scored on Ty Motes’ follow-up sacrifice fly. Arnold later had a two-out, two-run single and Hollis Holderfield followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0.Tyner Burris singled to add another run in the third making it 7-0 before Poyen scored its first run in the top of the fourth.Woodlawn responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single by Clark and Ethan Saeler scoring on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.The Bears’ final run came when Arnold scored on an error to stretch it to 10-1. The Indians’ final two scores came off errors in the sixth and seventh innings.Clark was the winning pitcher for Woodlawn, scattering four hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings.
