Bears Hold Off Panthers; Poyen Gets Past Woodlawn

MAGNET COVE - After being up by as many as 17 early in the fourth quarter, the Magnet Cove Panthers mounted a frantic comeback late but the Woodlawn Bears managed to hold on for a 49-44 road victory in 8-2A conference action last Friday night at Magnet Cove.After winning both the first and second quarters, the Bears were up 34-26 at halftime, and had a chance to essentially put the game away in the third when the Panthers managed just two points in the period. Woodlawn, however, missed seven free throws in the third and had to settle for a 42-27 lead going into the fourth.It was in that final period that the Panthers started to find their range as Magnet Cove had four players kno down 3's as the Panthers got back into the game.The Bears, however, withstood the rally to hang on for a 4-point win.Jude Roberts had 23 points to lead the Bears in scoring while dishing out four assists and making four steals. Garrett Weatherford had 13 points with seven rebounds.Woodlawn improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in league play with the conference win.Poyen 55, Woodlawn 49WOODLAWN - A lackluster start by Woodlawn put the Bears down by 13 early but they were able to fight back before the Poyen Indians eventually held on for a 55-49 win in a 8-2A conference game inside the Woodlawn Gym last Thursday.Woodlawn did not score for about the first five and a half minutes of the game as Poyen bolted out to 17-4 advantage by the end of the opening period. The Bears battled back in the second, using a couple of 3pointers for Garrett Weatherford and Jake Allred to pull within 26-23 by halftime.The Bears eventually took a brief lead in the fourth quarter before the Indians were able to turn back the rally to come away with the five-point victory.Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair said a poor night at the free throw line really hurt their chances as the Bears made just five-of-14 attempts from the charity stripe....
