WOODAWN - After trailing by three runs for the first four innings of the game, the Woodlawn Bears broke through with seven runs in the fifth as they knocked off the Stuttgart Ricebirds, 8-3, Tuesday evening at Woodlawn.
Stuttgart used four singles and a walk to plate three runs in the top of the first to grab the early lead.
Ricebird starting pitcher Landon Melnychuk left after four scoreless inning, and was replaced by Jacob Maddox to start the fifth.
The Bears were finally able to crank up their offense as Brayden Jones’ double pushed the first run across and a follow-up triple by Jase Bishop made it 3-2. A hit batter and a walk then loaded the bases, and Jayden Wilmoth hit into a fielder’s choice that ended scoring three runs after an overthrow to first, giving the Bears a 5-3 lead.
Three walks and a hit batter pushed two more runs across to make it 7-3.
Austin Howard’s double in sixth drove in Woodlawn’s final run.
Bishop got the pitching victory for the Bears after coming on in relief of starter Owen Stover in the fourth. Bishop gave up just one hit and one walk over four frames with two strikeouts.
Dylan Butler had a strong outing at the plate for Woodlawn, going 3-for-3, which included a double. Bishop was 2-for-4 with a triple. Jones, Howard and Wilmoth accounted for the other hits.
The Bears improved to 2-0 with the win.

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn Coach Tommy Richardson picked up his 700th victory in style Monday afternoon as his Bears simply demolished the Dumas Bobcats, 19-0, in a three-inning game to open the 2023 season Monday afternoon at Woodlawn Field.
The Bears scored 16 runs in the first inning and then added three more in the second before the game was called after the Bobcats batted in the top of the third.
