‘Cats Fall in Heartbreaker, 4-3

MAUMELLE - Maumelle Charter scored three runs off errors in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Falcons rallied from a two-run deficit to edge the Rison Wildcats, 5-4, in the season opener Monday afternoon at Maumelle.Rison led for much of the game, building a 3-0 lead with runs in the second, third and fourth innings.Andrew Couture scored the game’s first run off a wild pitch in the top of the second before Lawson Kidd doubled in Alex Tilley in the third to make it 2-0. Ayden Laws scored off an error in the third to push the lead to 3-0.Maumelle came back with a couple of runs off an error, a triple and RBI single in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.Noah Matheson added a run for Rison in the top of the seventh with a one-out double that drove in Kidd, who got aboard with a walk and then stole second. The Falcons flied out to start the bottom of the seventh before getting a walk and then scoring on off an error in the outfield to make it a one-run game at 4-3.As Wildcat third baseman Ayden Laws attempted to field a groun ball, a collision took place between him and a Maumelle base runner, leading to Laws falling down. While Laws was able to regain his footing and make the throw to first base, it was late leading to the hitter being ruled safe. Rison head coach Chad Cope called time to speak with the umpires about interference, yet the umpire crew called the base runner safe at third and ruled no interference had taken place. A fielding error on the next play led to the tying run and winning run crossing home plate to give the Falcons the victory.It was a disappointing loss for the ‘Cats who seemed to be cruising behind some solid pitching.Matheson, a sophomore, had a nice start on the mound.
