WOODLAWN - Woodlawn will be looking to give Strong its first loss of the season this Friday night when the 2-1 Bears make the trip to Union County to take on the 3-0 Bulldogs in an early season showdown of South Conference contenders.
The junior high teams play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m. Arkansas 8 Man Football has announced that it will be broadcasting the varsity game live over its YouTube channel as the Week 5 "Game of the Week." Before the season started, Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer pegged the Bulldogs as perhaps the team to beat for the South Conference championship as last year's outstanding sophomore class now has a year of experience under its belt.
Among that loaded junior class is All-State quarterback selection Kaiden McHenry, whom Hooten's Arkansas Football reported had 4.4 speed at a UAPB football camp over the summer. In addition, he also set a new 110-meters hurdle record for Class 1A last year. McHenry ran for 974 yards and 11 touchdowns in Strong's spread offense last season while passing for 740 yard with eight touchdowns. McHenry matches up with his twin brother, Germyren McHenry, who plays running back.
Overall, Meyer described the 'Dogs as big and "very, very athletic." He said it will be critical to play disciplined football Friday night, especially in regards to defending McHenry at quarterback. "We've got to keep him contained
We can't give him anything easy," he said, noting that the defense needs to guard against going too deep into the offensive backfield trying to contain him.
Strong is under the direction of new Head Coach Jason Porter, who has the Bulldogs sitting at 3-0 on the season. Strong shutout Prairie View Academy of Bastrop, La., 140 to win its season opener at home before knocking off Parkers Chapel 2216. Last Friday night, the 'Dogs opened conference play with an impressive 44-8 road win over the Dermott Rams.
