MONTICELLO - Drew Central capitalized on seven Rison errors as the Pirates squeezed out a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats Tuesday afternoon in the 8-3A conference opener for both teams at Monticello.The game turned out to be a pitching duel between Rison’s Noah Matheson and Drew Central’s Hunter Griffin as both starters when the distance with Matheson allowing just two hits and Griffin one.Despite the steady arm on the mound, miscues cost Rison dearly as all three Drew Central runs were unearned.Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the fourth when the Pirates converted three consecutive errors to start the inning into two runs.Rison cut that lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Brody Howard was hit by a pitch to start the inning and his courtesy runner, Griffin Weaver, stole second and then scored when a throw to first on a dropped third strike got past the first baseman.The ‘Cats threatened to tie it up the sixth when Matheson and Mason Weaver both drew walks to start the frame. However, Matheson was thrown out trying to steal home.The Pirates’ final run came off an error in the bottom of the sixth.Matheson gave up just two hits and one walk over six innings while striking out nine. He also had Rison’s only hit....
