Junior Bears Fall at Marvell, 28-14

MARVELL - Woodlawn suffered four turnovers and the Marvell Junior Mustangs utilized their size and speed advantage to knock off the Juniors Bears, 28-14, in an South Conference game Friday at Marvell.Marvell jumped out to a 14-0 lead, using a 61-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game and then a 52-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. The Junior Mustangs ran in their first conversion attempt but were stopped on the second.Woodlawn’s 7th grade quarterback Bentley Hoyt then seemed to find his rhythm as he netted 25 yards on three carries, the last of which went for 16 yards as he carried some larger defenders with him. However, the Junior Bears fumbled it away on the next play.After forcing the Junior Mustangs to punt, Hoyt again had the hot hand, hitting Duke Scott for a 24-yard completion on the first play of the drive and later hitting Griffin Manes for a five-yard pick up to the Marvell 8. Two plays later, Hoyt found the end zone just inside the pylon for a five-yard touchdown run. Tate Jacks then ran in the two-point conversion to cut the Junior Mustangs’ lead to 14-8 with 2 seconds left in the first half.The play, however, proved costly for the Junior Bears as Hoyt was hit from the side  and had to be transported for medical attention in Helena. The Woodalwn coaching staff said that Hoyt checked out fine at the hospital.Woodlawn went three-and-out on the opening series of the second half while Marvell drove 55 yards in seven plays, with the score coming on a 34-yard pass completion on 4th-and-15. Marvell added the two-pointer to make it 22-8.The Junior Bears next drive ended with an interception that was returned to the Woodlawn 12. Marvell had another touchdown pass on the next play and led 28-8 after the conversion pass was no good with 5:35 left.Woodlawn surprised the Junior Mustangs on its ensuing possession when the Junior Bears lined up in the swinging gate formation.
