Lady Bears Take Second at 8-2A Tourney

RISON - The Woodlawn Lady Bears enter the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament this week as the no. 2 seed from the 8-2A after falling to the Poyen Lady Indians, 60-24, in the District Tournament finals Monday night.Woodlawn, 19-13 overall, is scheduled to face the Cutter-Morning Star Lady Eagles, the no. 3 seed from the 7-2A conference, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at Poyen. Cutter-Morning Star, which finished the regular season tied atop the 7-2A standings with Dierks at 13-1, has a 24-4 record. The Lady Eagles won their first 19 games before falling at Dierks, 45-37, on Jan. 24. They reeled off five straight wins after that before losing their final three games, including a 67-56 setback to Mountain Pine in the 7-2A District Tournament semifinals. Should the Lady Bears pull off the victory Thursday, they would advance to the regional semifinals and automatically earn a berth in the Class 2A State Tournament to be held next week at Cedar Ridge High School at Newark. The winner of Thursday's regional matchup will face the winner between Dierks and Ouachita.Woodlawn had its hands full with Poyen in the district tournament finals.The Lady Indians, 26-2 and ranked as high as fourth in some Class 2A state polls, led 7-2 after the opening period before putting up 21 in the second half to take a 28-14 lead into the break. Poyen continued to pull away in the third, and closed out the game with an 18-3 run in fourth.Poyen's Kenady Barrett had 34 points in the championship game as the Lady Indians went undefeated in both conference play and the tournament."I thought my girls played hard for four solid quarters," said Lady Bears Coach Synthia English."I thought in the first half we played solid defense," she said. "For us, we could never get any offense going and when we did, we couldn't get shots to fall.
