Lady Bears Upend Smackover

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn hammered three homeruns and had two doubles as the Lady Bears used a five-run fourth inning to get past the Smackover Lady Buckaroos, 10-5, in the season opener Monday afternoon at Lady Bear Field.Kendall Tooke started the fireworks early when blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to give the Lady Bears a quick 2-0 lead.That lead didn’t last long, however, as Smackover plated three runs using a single, a triple, a hit batter and an error to go up 3-2. All three runs were scored with two out.Woodlawn’s Macy Harrison tied the game in the bottom of the second when her two-out single scored Anniston Wright.The Lady Bucks regained the lead, 4-3, with off an RBI single in the top of the third.Woodlawn took the lead for good with its five runs in the fourth.Lillie Faye McWhorter got it started with a solo homerun to lead off the inning, tying it 4-4. Singles by Kathryn Dixon and Harrison put a couple of runners on when Laci Rauls smashed a two-out double to score both. Karsyn Chastain followed with another double that scored Rauls’ courtesy runner, Amanda Ellington, and Bay Aud then singled to drive in Chastain, making it 8-4.Harrison then had a two-run homer in the fifth to push the Lady Bears’ lead to 10-4.Smackover’s final run came off a ground out in the top of the seventh.Woodlawn had the bats working in their first game of the season by dishing out 13 hits. Harrison had the hot stick, going 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs. Lily White, Rauls and Chastain had two hits apiece while Tooke, Aud, McWhorter and Dixon had one apiece.Chastain was the starting pitcher for the Lady Bears. She gave up four hits, no walks and struck out one over four innings. Rauls finished out the final four innings to get the win. She allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight. ...
