RISON - Woodlawn football coach Zach Meyer learned last Friday that his Bears will officially finish the 2023 season with a winning record after the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) announced that the Strong-Huttig Bulldogs were forfeiting all their games this season.
The AAA announced in a press release last Friday afternoon, Nov. 17, that Strong had self-reported the use of an ineligible player and would forfeit all con- tests from the 2023 football season, including the Bulldogs' opening round playoff victory over Augusta on Nov. 10. Woodlawn lost to Strong, 4820, back on Sept. 29 in the Bears' South Conference opener. Woodlawn went on to finish 5-5 after falling in the first round of the playoffs. By virtue of Strong's forfeit, Woodlawn will officially finish the 2023 season with a 6-4 record.
Strong finished the season with an 80 record and won the South Conference championship. Mountain Pine will now by the official South Conference champion followed by Spring Hill, Woodlawn, Dermott, Hermitage and Strong.
Due to the playoff forfeit, Augusta, the no. 4 seed from the North Conference, is awarded with the victory and will travel to Spring Hill to face the Bears, the no. 3 seed from the South Conference, this Friday night in the 8-man semifinals. The winner will face the Rector Cougars in the state finals next Thursday, Nov. 30, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
