WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Junior Bears had five turnovers - two of which were interceptions returned for touchdowns - as the bigger and faster Strong Bulldogs rolled to a 62-14 victory at the Carl Jones Sports Complex last Friday afternoon. With a starting unit made up mostly of 7th and 8th graders, the Junior Bears struggled to match up with the taller Junior Bulldogs. That was evident on Strong’s first touchdown when a Junior Bulldog receiver with about a one-foot height advantage pulled in a pass over the Woodlawn defender to go 35 yards for Strong’s first touchdown to make it 6-0 with 6:13 left. That score came after Woodlawn turned it over on their first possession of the game. The Junior Bears did answer, however, when Braydon Jones’ 18-yard pass to Tate Jacks gave Woodlawn a first-and-goal at the Strong 4 and Jones ran it in on the next play. The two-point attempt was no good. The Junior ‘Dogs, however, scored on their next two possessions as well: the first on a 37-yard pass following a Woodlawn interception and the second on a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown. That made it 28-6 Strong with 2:35 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Woodlawn’s Griffin Manes return it 85 yards for a touchdown, and then Jones hit tight end Miles West for the two-pointer to cut the Junior Bulldogs’ lead to 28-14.Strong, however, got that score back before halftime when they completed a 30-yard pass for a score with 42 seconds in the second quarter. A successful conversion made it 36-14 at halftime. The Junior Bulldogs’ second-half scores came on a 63-yard run, 71-yard pass completion, 31-yard run and 34-yard interception return.Woodlawn fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in South Conference play with the loss. ...
