The local Toys for Tots Literacy Program will be distributing up to 500 books for youth 0-18 free of charge to youth who come with their parents to the Pioneer Village Craft Fair Saturday, April 18. “This is part of a 2,000 book distribution to youth in the counties covered by the local Toys for Tots Program, Cleveland, Dallas, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties, for Easter,” said Matthew Yamell, Toys for Tots Coordinator.The Toys for Tots Literacy Program not only brings the joy of reading to less fortunate children, but also serves as an important tool in breaking the cycle of poverty. We aim to help area youth compete academically and to succeed in life by providing them direct access to books and educational resources that enhance their ability to read and communicate effectively. To this end, the local Toys for Tots Literacy Program has also provided local libraries with 625 books for participants in Summer Reading Programs.“While we have supplied some of the 1,000+ requested books to local libraries for Summer Reading participants,” Yamell added, “we are working to put together the remaining orders and we could use your assistance in doing so. Thus, we will also be collecting books and donations at the Pioneer Craft Fair. We are looking for books in new condition that will help make kids smile and expand their imaginations. This includes picture books for toddlers, early reading books for emergent readers, young adult novels, coloring books, activity books, cookbooks, etc.”Additionally, books in new condition for youth aged 0-18 can be dropped off at local libraries, The Rison Pharmacy, The Rison United Methodist Church, and JB’s Restaurant in Star City. We are also seeking financial donations to help with literacy in our area.
