RISON - A worker with MTS Contracting of Kansas City, Mo., works on repairing mortar between the bricks of the nearly 112-year-old Cleveland County Courthouse in Rison Tuesday afternoon. Former County Judge Melody Spears secured a $76,830 grant last July from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Fund to make repairs to the masonry wall on the west side of the courthouse. She told the Cleveland County Quorum Court this would fund the second in what would a three-phase restoration effort started by the late County Judge Gary Spears.
She the next phase will address the clock in the clock tower on the courthouse. Current County Judge Jimmy Cummings said the project is making good progress. While the contract gives MTS a window of until September to complete the job, Cummings said he expects it to be completed before then. MTS specializes in restoring old buildings.
