Cherry Cemetery Near Rison Becomes County's 14th Entry on National Register

RISON - The addition of the Cherry Cemetery near Rison to the National Register of Historic Places marks the 14th location in Cleveland County to receive the designation.The Cherry Cemetery, also known as the Temperance Hill Cemetery, is located about 5.5 miles southeast of Rison along Mt. Elba Road. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 5, 2024, according to the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) website.Other sites within Cleveland County that are on the National Register include:Attwood-Hopson House, New Edinburg - ca. 1890, a one-and-a-half story Queen Anne style residence that was redesigned in 1917 to reflect Craftsman style architecture.Barnett-Attwood House, New Edinburg - 1835-1836, a log dog-trot house.Cleveland County Clerk's Building, Rison - 1902, frame office that was used as the county clerk's office that once sat on the grounds of the Cleveland County Courthouse in Ri-son. It is now the Mercantile building at the Pioneer Village in Rison.Cleveland County Courthouse, Rison - 1911, a structure designed using Beaux-Arts architecture.Magnolia Petroleum Company Filling Station, Kingsland - c.1930, Craftsman and Tudor Revival-style gas station.Marks' Mills Battlefield Park - commemorates the April 25, 1864 Civil War battle. It is part of the Camden Expedition National Historic Landmark.Mount Olivet Methodist Church, Rison - 1867, vernacular Greek Revival church building that was originally located at Calmer.
