LITTLE ROCK - Dr. Harvie Marks Attwood, a Valedictorian of the 1970 Graduation class of Rison High School, was presented with the UAMS 2026 Master Teacher Award May 21 during a ceremony at the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute.Dr. Attwood accepted his award from Dr. Kraleti, UAMS Chair of Family and Preventive Medicine, who quoted the resident’s characterization for Dr. Attwood as “humble, steady and always invested in the success of his residents.”It was also pointed out that Dr. Attwood is responsible for teaching future doctors who practice locally, regionally and nationally. For those of us who know him well, we also know Dr. Attwood’s teaching extends far beyond, to former residents, nurses, colleagues, local school officials, friends and community.This award is presented annually at the Dean’s Honor Day to a faculty member who has consistently demonstrated a history of excellence in education. The criteria include (but is not limited to) the number of students or residents influenced by the educational efforts, the different levels (graduate students, medical students, etc.) of education in which the faculty member has engaged, demonstration of educational leadership and administration, publications related to medical education, length of educational involvement, and innovations in medical education introduced and carried out.The Selection process is multi-stage and designed to identify the best-qualified candidate. Department Chairs are asked to nominate faculty members for this award. The Educational Awards Selection Committee then makes a recommendation to the Dean, who will make the final decision.
