Kingsland Tables Proposed Building Permit Ordinance

KINGSLAND - An online petition opposing a proposed ordinance that would establish a building permit fee program for the City of Kingsland has been created after the Kingsland City Council decided to table the measure during in a special meeting last Thursday.

Kingsland Mayor Samantha Johnson broke a 2-2 tie to move the measure forward when council members Keith Spencer and Lee Penister voted against it after its first reading. Council members Suny Blair and Linda Burns supported it.

Ordinance 2026-2 would “establish a municipal building permit program for work performed within the corporate limits of the City of Kingsland.”

According the proposed ordinance, the following work taking place within the City of Kingsland would need a permit:

•    Construction of a new principal building or dwelling
•    Construction of a commercial building
•    An addition that increases the footprint or conditioned floor area of a building
•    Structural alteration or structural remodeling
•    Construction or placement of a garage, carport, accessory building, storage building or similar structure when the city detgermines a permit is required based on size, permanent foundation, utilities, location or code considerations
•    Placement, installation, relocation or substantial alteration of a manufactured or mobile home
•    Relocation of an existing building or structure
•    Demolition of a building or substantial structure
•    A change in occupancy or use when code review is required
•    Other construction for which a permit is required by an applicable code or ordinance

Johnson said after the meeting that she put the ordinance together after researching it online. What prompted her to propose the ordinance was that several people asked her if she had a permit to build the proposed amphitheater …
