RISON - Alain Reeves, a senior at Rison High School, is one of three Future Farmers of America (FFA) students in Arkansas to be selected to present their papers before the national World Food Prize Global Youth Institute meeting this October in Des Moines, Iowa. The World Food Prize Global Youth Institute is a week-long academic conference focused on youth efforts to address global food security issues. This year's conference will be held Oct. 2427. During the conference, students will have the opportunity to engage with their peers from across the world. Students will present research that they have conducted before a roundtable of experts, participate in an interactive group project focused on global food security challenges, and attend workshops, where they will learn from leaders on issues related to food security, agriculture, climate change and sustainability. In March, Reeves wrote a paper about water scarcity and salinity issues of water in Ireland. Her paper included ways to combat the issues using hydroponics, aquaponics, deep wells and reverse osmosis systems. In April, she went to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and defended her paper to other high school students, college students and professors. Reeves was one of three FFA students elected to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute. The other two were Sara Sherrill of White Hall High School and Maddison Franklin of Smackover High School. Last school year, Reeves won State Champion Gold ranking in Specialty Crop Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) at the Arkansas FFA Convention and will advance to nationals at National FFA Convention in October. Reeves' SAE project was raising mushrooms and microgreens through her farm, Gnome Home Farms, and selling it to local restaurants and catering companies.
