In a recent podcast, Rison Mayor Charles Roberts shared a comprehensive infrastructure and development plan for the city, highlighting both major logistical hurdles and ambitious community growth initiatives.
A top priority is a new, door-to-door Low to Moderate Income (LMI) survey. After recently dropping below the critical 51% LMI threshold, Rison lost automatic eligibility for major state and federal grants, making this non-invasive survey essential for securing future funding.
Water and sewer infrastructure also remains a major focus. Following a $9 million overhaul, the city successfully reduced a catastrophic 71% water loss rate to under 10%. Now, Roberts is targeting the failing sewer system, pursuing a $500,000 federal grant to repair neglected lift stations and utilizing trenchless technology to replace aging underground pipes.
Community revitalization efforts are simultaneously underway. The city has cleared blighted downtown properties to develop modern public spaces. Additionally, Roberts is urging residents to petition ARDOT for critical pedestrian safety improvements to the historic 1936 highway overpass, which currently forces residents into dangerous traffic.
Finally, Rison's Veterans Park will soon receive a decommissioned M60 Patton tank. The city will rely on local fundraising and volunteer labor to install the artifact, a project Roberts says perfectly highlights Rison's exceptional community support.
