Jr. Bears Rush Pass Augusta, 44-28

WOODLAWN - Griffin Manes ran for 225 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Woodlawn Junior Bears moved to 2-1 with a 44-28 non-conference victory over the Augusta Junior Red Devils last Friday at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.Woodlawn rolled up 397 yards on the ground with Manes topping the rushing list. Fellow freshman running back Coltan Simmons followed with 96 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns.The Junior Bears got off to a rough start, fumbling it away at their own 29 yard line on the first play from scrimmage. Two plays after the turnover, however, 7th grader Brody Richardson came up with an interception at the Woodlawn 15.Simmons went 29 yards on the first play after the turnover, and then capped an eight-play, 85yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run with 2:13 left in the first quarter. Brayden Jones added the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Junior Bears.Manes came up with another turnover for Woodlawn when he recovered an Augusta fumble at the Woodlawn 31. Three plays later, Manes burst through the line of scrimmage for a 59-yard touchdown run with 5:37 left in the second. The two-point pass was dropped to leave it 14-0 Junior Bears.This time the Red Devils answered, using a 50-yard touchdown run and conversion to close it to 14-8 with 2:45 left.Woodlawn recovered the onside attempt on the ensuing kickoff, and after a 20-yard run by Manes to start the drive, runs of 23 and three yards by Simmons set up Brayden Jones' score from two yards out. Simmons added the conversion to push the Junior Bear lead to 228 with 1:05 left in the first half.Augusta used a 39-yard run to get down to the Woodlawn 23 before late in the second quarter, but Manes dumped the Junior Red Devils for a 14-yard loss on the next play to turn back the threat.Bentley Hoyt, another 7thgrader, picked off an Augusta pass on the opening series of the second half at Junior Red Devil 45.
