Cleveland County Sheriff Jack Rodgers told the Kingsland City Council that the state police may get involved in a matter regarding the return of a handgun that former Kingsland city marshal Ronnie Smith has yet to turn back in. Earlier this year, the Kingsland council voted to do away with its city marshal's office, and instead, enter into a contract with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department for local law enforcement.
Cleveland County will be included in the multi-county Arkansas Red River Campaign Scenic By-Way, a formal driving tour of the Civil War battlefields across southern Arkansas that includes the Marks' Mills Battlefield site near New Edinburg.
The Woodlawn School Board approved a bid of $396,907 from Simmons Construction of Warren to build a new media center/library at the Woodlawn School campus. The bid for the new library came in at just about what was expected, which means the district could be on track to complete both the library and new weight room projects within a $500,000 budget.
The Rison Wildcats will host the Fordyce Redbugs in the 65th consecutive meeting of the rivals in the opening of the high school football season Friday night, while the Woodlawn Bears will be at home to face the Johnson County Westside Rebels.

The Cleveland County Quorum Court's Ambulance Committee is proposing a plan that will give the Cleveland County Ambulance Service a 60-day trial period to see if some proposed pay changes will reduce comp time that has been accumulated within the department. The proposal under consideration is to increase the number of work days for full-time paramedics and EMTs from the current two days to three days per week, and to increase the part-time pay for paramedics and EMTs.
