School board races will be held in the county next Tuesday. In Zone 3 of the Cleveland County School District, sitting board member Charlene Freeman is being challenged by Amber Offutt. Willie Rainey is unopposed for a position on the Cleveland County School Board. At Woodlawn, Shane Dixon and former school board member Rodger Stewart are running for the position being left vacant by Ray Gavin, who is not seeking re-election.
Sales tax collections in Cleveland County for the first eight months of 2016 are down by as much as 3.6 percent compared to the previous year, County Treasurer Jack Hopson told the Cleveland County Quorum Court last Thursday night.
The Rison City Council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday night to dedicate its portion of a proposed 1.5-cent sales tax to go toward maintenance, operations and construction of a new county jail to be decided at the November 8 general election. Since neither Rison nor Kingsland has its own jail, County Judge Gary Spears proposed developing an agreement that the county would provide and maintain jail space for those cities in exchange for their portion of the sales tax.
The Fordyce Redbugs ended the Rison Wildcats' 15-game home winning streak, 36-14, in the 65th consecutive meeting of the two teams here last Friday night. At Woodlawn, the Bears overcame five turnovers to blank the Johnson County Westside Rebels, 14-0.

Concerns about additional overtime pay caused the Cleveland County Quorum Court's Pay Committee to reject a proposed pay change for the Ambulance Department, forcing the county to go back to the drawing board one more time to find a way to reduce comp time that has accumulated within the department.
