RISON - The Rison Junior High Wildcats ended their 2022 football season on a good note Thursday night of last week at George Walker Field of Champions, ripping the Barton Junior High Bears, 46-24. The win gave Rison a season record of 35 and 3-3 in the 6-3A Conference race.
Quarterback Kyson Walker and running back Spencer Towery both scored touchdowns in the early going, with Towery adding a pair of 2-point conversions, as the Wildcats built a 160 lead.
After Barton closed the gap to 16-8 with 2:10 left in the opening half, Rison drove for a touchdown with 15.9 seconds to go before the break, when Walker raced around the left side and made it to the front corner of the end zone for the TD. Towery added another 2-point conversion that made it 24-8 at the half. A key play in the scoring march was a pass completion from Walker to end Bryce Phillips that advanced Rison into scoring position. Phillips also had a slew of tackles to spearhead the 'Cat defense.
The Wildcats increased their lead to 32-8 early in the third quarter, when Henry Gamer picked up a Barton fumble at midfield, returning all the way to the Bears' 5 before being tackled. Towery scored from a yard out and tacked on a 2-point conversion to pad Rison's lead to 32-8.
Following a Barton TD and 2point conversion that made it 32-16, the Walker-to-Phillips combination clicked again for another long pass play to put Rison in scoring position. With 3 seconds remaining in the third period, Towery crossed the goalline from 10 yards out, and Ethan Saeler plunged across for a 2-point conversion to give the 'Cats a 40-16 advantage.
Rison closed out its scoring with 3:42 left in the game, when Towery raced 20 yards for a TD, as the Wildcats' lead swelled to 46-16.
A long run by the Bears provided the final touchdown of the night, putting the score at 46-24 with just 2:11 remaining in the contest.
