HAMBURG - A slow start put the Woodlawn Lady Bears in a 14-point hole by the end of the first quarter as the Class 4A Hamburg Lady Lions managed to hold on in the second half for a 43-33 win in the Lady Bears' season opener Monday night at Hamburg.
The Lady Lions got off to a fast start, racing out to a 16-2 lead by the end of the opening period before extending it to 248 at halftime.
Woodlawn began to find some offense in the second half, edg-ing Hamburg 9-8 in the third and 16-11 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the early hole.
Coach Logan Adair said the Lady Bears committed more than 30 turnovers overall in their season opener, but the misques improved as the game went on.
Anna Fitzgibbon led Woodlawn with nine points followed by freshman Jaci Hoyt and Lillie McWhorter, who both had eight points apiece. Sklyar Conner hit a couple of 3-pointers to finish with six.
