RISON - The Woodlawn Bears will face the Acorn Tigers in the first round of the Class 2A South Region Basketball Tournament at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Redbug Arena in Fordyce.
Woodlawn is the no. 2 seed from the 8-2A Conference while Acorn, located outside of Mena, is the no. 3 seed from the 7-2A Conference.
The winner of Thursday’s game will advance to the South Region semifinals against the Dierks/Ouachita winner at 8:30 p.m Friday, Feb. 24, at Fordyce.
A victory on Thursday also assures the winner of a trip to the Class 2A State Tournament to be held Feb. 28-March 4 at Rector High School.
Woodlawn enters the game with a 15-9 overall record after finishing second in the 8-2 A regular season as well as last week’s district tournament. The Bears beat Junction City in the seminfals, 52-46, before falling to the regular season and district tournament champion Fordyce Redbugs, 55-46, in the championship game on Saturday.
Acorn, 17-10 overall, finished third in the 7-2A regular season and district tournament. The Tigers handed 21-3 Dierks one of its only three losses this year when the Tigers blew out the Outlaws, 67-41, on Dec. 13 at home.
Woodlawn comes into the regional opener having won nine of its last 11 games, with those only losses being to fifth-ranked Fordyce. “We’re probably playing our best basketball right now,” said Bears Coach Logan Adair.
Adair said the Tigers’ 6-6 senior point guard Braylan Bohlman, who he described as both a great shooter and great passer, will be a match-up issue for the Bears. He said they will also need to be aware of fellow senior Westen McEntire, who is another good shooter.
“They play a different style than we’re used to seeing around here,” Adair said of Acorn. “It’s going to be an odd match-up.”
