Bears Will Be Without Moore, Weatherford Against Dragons

WOODLAWN - When the season started just a couple of weeks ago, Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said he had three solid options to start at quarterback. Now, entering week 3, he is down to one. Juniors Aden Moore and Garrett Weatherford, both of whom play quarterback and running back, will miss this Friday night's non-conference game against the Class 4A Genoa Central Dragons due to injuries. Woodlawn is substituting Genoa Central this week for Guy-Perkins, which launched its football program this year. Meyer said he learned last week that Guy-Perkins' varsity team would not have enough players to field a team, so he reached out to Genoa Central about playing and the Dragons agreed. The Woodlawn Junior Bears will still play the Guy-Perkins Junior Thunderbirds at 5 p.m. Friday at the Carl Jones Sports Complex. The Woodlawn and Genoa Central varsity teams will follow at 7 p.m. Meyer said he learned Tuesday that Moore, who rushed for 113 yards with one touchdown and completed all four of his pass attempts for 133 yards and two touchdowns in last week's 44-14 win against Midland, was diagnosed with a shoulder injury this week and will not be playing. He did not know the extent of his injury as of press time. Weatherford, meanwhile, left early in the second quarter against Midland last week after suffering an ankle injury. Meyer said an x-ray showed no fracture but Weatherford is not expected to be ready for this week. Weatherford took the most snaps at quarterback in the Bears' season-opener against Prairie View Academy while Moore was the primary quarterback last week against Midland. When not playing quarterback, Moore and Weatherford are both used as I backs. Meyer said Woodlawn will be razor thin in the offensive and defensive backfield as a result of the injuries.
