RISON - The Rison Junior Wildcats grabbed an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Stuttgart responded with three touchdowns before the half ended and the Ricebirds went on wear down the hosts for a 49-24 victory in a non-conference contest at George Walker Field of Champions Tuesday night.
The loss dropped Rison to 3-1 on the season. The Junior 'Cats will see action next on Thursday, Oct. 5, when they host the Camden Harmony Grove Junior Hornets in a 6-3A Conference battle.
Against Class 4A Stuttgart Tuesday night, the Junior 'Cats took the opening kick and drove to the Stuttgart 29 before turning the ball over on downs. However, a few plays later, Rison's Spencer Towery covered a fumble at the Ricebirds' 39 to set up the Wildcats' first touchdown. With 6:21 left in the second period, quarterback Kyson Walker ran across for a TD from 4 yards out, and then added a 2-point conversion to put Rison on top, 8-0.
The ensuing onsides kick backfired on Rison, when Stuttgart returned the short kick for a touchdown to make it 8-7. Following a pass interception, the Ricebirds scored again to take the lead for good 13-8 with 5:09 to go in the first half. After a roughing the punter penalty against Rison late in the second period, Stuttgart went in for a touchdown on a 19-yard pass play with just 5 seconds left in the half to build a 21-8 advantage. The Ricebirds went on to tack up two more TDs early in the third quarter for a 35-8 cushion.
Then Walker, on a keeper, reversed his field and dashed 67 yards for a TD and another 2point conversion that made it 35-16. After the Ricebirds answered with a touchdown, Kyson Fletcher raced 59 yards for a TD, followed by Walker's keeper on a 2-point conversion that pulled the 'Cats within, 4224. But the deep Stuttgart squad continued to wear down Rison, adding one more touchdown on the last snap of the third period that put the final margin at 4924.
