WOODLAWN - Sarah Melhorn hit four of Woodlawn's 11 3-pointers as the Lady Bears hammered the Junction City Lady Dragons, 66-33, in 6-2A conference action last Thursday at the Woodlawn Gym.
The Lady Bears improved to 2-1 in conference play and 8-5 overall with the win.
Woodlawn started and ended the game finding their range from beyond the arch. Melhorn hit two of her four treys in the first quarter as Kathryn Dixon added another to help give Woodlawn a commanding 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Coach Synthia English said the game slowed in the second period as the Lady Bears fouled too much, allowing Junction City to cut it to a 25-13 game by halfrimw. That slow down didn't last long, however, as Woodlawn began pulling away again in the third, extending that 12-point margin to 19 by the start the fourth quarter. Again, the Lady Bears got hot from outside in the final period as they drained six 3-pointers in the final frame to close out the 30-point victory. Melhorn and Jaci Hoyt both had two 3's in that fourth while Grace Holland and Kelsi Mack accounted for the other two.
Hoyt led the Lady Bears in scoring with 15 followed by Dixon with 13 and Melhorn with 12.
English also noted that Lillie McWhorter was cleaning up on the rebounds and also hit 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. She said Dixon had a "phenomenal" game defensively. "She was stealing everything that game her way," English said.
