Bears Move Into First Place Tie

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn held its last two opponents to less that 30 points as the Bears moved into a three-way tie atop the 8-2A standings after blowout wins over Gurdon and Parkers Chapel last week. Coach Logan Adair said the Bears were giving up more than 50 points per game early in the season but he senses the defense may be coming around after knocking of the Gurdon Go Devils, 56-28, last Tuesday on the road and then invoking the mercy rule against the Parkers Chapels Trojans, 64-27, last Friday night at home. Woodlawn improved to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in league play with the two conference wins. The Bears are now in a three-way tie for first with Junction City and Fordyce. Each of the top three teams has both a win and a loss against the others: Woodlawn lost at Fordyce but beat Junction City at home; Junction City lost at Woodlawn but beat Fordyce at home; and Fordyce beat Woodlawn at home and lost to Junction City on the road. The Bears are scheduled to host Fordyce on Jan. 26 before traveling to Junction City on Jan. 30. Woodlawn will host the Rison Wildcats in an 8-2A contest this Friday night at the Woodlawn Gym. The two teams were scheduled to square off Tuesday night but the game was rescheduled to Friday due to the winter weather.
