Joanne Thomasson McGowan was born on February 29, 1932, and died peacefully on August 20, 2023. She was born in Rison, Arkansas, and was preceded in death by her parents, B. W Thomasson and Iliff Powers Thomasson, and her beloved husband, James Mc-Gowan. She leaves behind her two sons, Mike McGowan (Karen) and his daughters, Madison (Justin) and Mackenzie; and Bill McGowan (Teresa), his two daughters, Lauren (Chuck) and Katie (Norman), and a great grandson, Zeke. Her family, her numerous friends, and her extended family will miss her affirmative presence, her quick wit, and her ability to listen without judgement. She shared her wisdom and her truth with those she loved as well as fortunate strangers along the way. Her career as a teacher was varied and longstanding. She taught in Pine Bluff, Texarkana, Jonesboro, Little Rock and Dallas, Texas public schools and colleges for over 35 years. Over the years, the churches she attended and served were grateful for her loving heart and eagerness to help in any way she could. Her most recent membership was at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where she was an active member in Mary-Esther Circle, Open Door Sunday School Class, officer with United Methodist Women. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, at 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Hot Springs Arkansas to celebrate her life among her family and friends. Graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Rison, Arkansas, 10 a.m., with Pastor David Fleming officiating. Commemorative donations can be made to Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers or other gifts.
