Haley, local lumberman, says operations have begun at his new sawmill location on Saline River near Gum Log, 10 miles south of Rison. Mr. Haley recently purchased a large tract of hardwood timber from Garner Brothers. Shipments will be made from Rison. Tax assessing is far below standard. Stricter enforcement of assessments in the county is urged. Fifty-nine youths of the county are entered in a cotton growing contest. A gold watch will be awarded to the boy who makes his acre of cotton pay handsomely. J.L. Sadler Lumber Co. began operation of its sawmill plant here Monday. The plant is located north of the railroad station on the Walker old mill site. Mr. Sadler has built a number of houses on his mill property. The mill will employ approximately 25 workers. 90 YEARS AGO MARCH 22, 1933 After a holiday of two weeks, during which time The Bank of Rison operated on a restricted basis, limiting withdrawals to 5 percent of deposits, they opened Saturday morning on an unrestricted basis, much to the delight of their customers. The banking holiday here became effective only when the plan was made statewide on a restricted basis by the bank commissioner and nation-wide by a presidential order. It was in no way a reflection on the condition of the local bank. The holiday has apparently been of much benefit to both banks and depositors over the entire country from a standpoint of confidence, as only banks which have been found to be in a sound condition have been allowed to open for unrestricted business.
