WOODLAWN - A berth in the regional tournament will be at stake tonight when the Woodlawn Bears meet the Ouachita Warriors in the quarterfinals of the 8-2A District Tournament at Junction City.Ouachita, the no. 6 seed in the tournament, beat Parkers Chapel, the no. 7 seed, 58-44 to advance to the quarterfinal matchup with the Bears. The winner of tonight’s 8:30 p.m. tipoff will advance to the semifinals and earn one of the district’s four transfer spots to next week’s Region 4 Tournament.The Warriors enter the game with a 20-14 overall record after going 8-8 in league action.Woodlawn, 21-8 overall and the no. 3 seed after going 12-4 in conference play, swept the Warriors in their two previous meetings this season, falling 71-58 at home and 72-53 on the road.The Bears earned the no. 3 seed after getting an unexpected lopsided win over the eventual regular season champion Hampton Bulldogs in the regular season finale last Friday night at Woodlawn.In what was anticipated to be big matchup between two of the top teams in the 8-2A actually turned out to be more of a glorified scrimmage for the Bears as they blew out the Bulldogs, 85-37, after Hampton sat all of its starters.Entering the final week of the regular season last week, Hampton was alone at the top of the 8-2A standings at 13-1 but still had road games against the league’s second and third place teams, Junction City and Woodlawn. The Dogs ended up losing their Thursday night game at Junction City, 55-51, which allowed the Dragons to pull within a game of the Hampton.However, Hampton still owned the tiebreaker over Junction City since the Bulldogs won by a larger margin, 50-43, in their conference game at Hampton.
