Bears' Rauls Gets 2A State Title at Arkansas Weightlifting Meet

RISON - Woodlawn's Jude Rauls won the Class 2A competition in the 165-pound division at the Arkansas State Weightlifting Championships held May 6 at Lake Hamilton High School. Rauls was one of four Woodlawn weightlifters who competed at the state meet. Coach Trent Young pointed out that Woodlawn did not have enough lifters to compete in the overall team standings. However, he said the Bears' overall totals would have ranked sixth as a team in the Class 2A standings. The Powerlifting Meet consists of three lifts - the squat, the bench press and the deadlift - while the meet held May 6 at Lake Hamilton consisted of two lifts: the power clean and bench press. Rauls was the top lifter among the Class 2A competitors after lifting 215 lbs. in the power clean and 275 lbs. in the bench press for a total of 490 lbs. He was third among all classifications in the 165-pound division. Reese Merechka of Charleston was the overall winner with a 550 lbs. total. Steven Shaddock of Rison edged out Rauls for second overall by 10 pounds after finishing with a total of 500 lbs. compared to 490 lbs. for Rauls. Meanwhile, Aidan Moore of Woodlawn was second in Class 2A in the 148-pound division after lifting a personal best 185 lbs. in the power clean and 185 lbs. in the bench press for a total of 370 lbs. Coach Young noted that Moore was 8/10th of a pound over the weight limit from qualifying for the132-pound division. His total would have been the best in Class 2A in that division. Young also praised the progress that Nick Sullivan has made during the spring semester. Sullivan was fourth among the Class 2A lifters after lifting 225 lbs. in the power clean and 205 lbs. in the bench press for 430 lbs. total. Young said both lifts were personal bests for Sullivan.
