Bears Will Have Bye This Week; Conference Title Within Reach

WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Bears will have a bye this week before closing the out the regular season with back-to-back home games against Marvell (Oct. 31) and Brinkley (Nov. 7).Woodlawn can determine its fate as far as the South Conference championship is concerned by winning out. The Bears are currently 6-0 overall with conference wins over Strong (58-34), Hermitage (70-20) and Dermott (76-56).The Marvell game next week will be homecoming for the Bears. The Mustangs are winless so far, standing at 0-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play. They are scheduled to play at Dermott this week before closing out the year with the trip to Woodlawn.Like the Bears, Brinkley can also determine its own fate. The Tigers are 5-2 overall but 3-0 in conference with wins over Hermitage (50-18), Dermott (20-14) and Marvell (34-6).Brinkley could be tested this Friday night when they host the defending state champion Strong Bulldogs for a crucial South Conference showdown that will have playoff implications for both teams. Even if the Tigers were to lose against Strong, they would still have a chance to earn a share of the conference title by beating Woodlawn in the regular season finale.Brinkley will have an open date next week before facing the Bears on Nov. 7.The top four seeds from both the South and North conferences will earn playoff berths. The top two seeds from each conference will host the first round game with the no. 1 seeds hosting the no. 4 seeds, and the no. 2 seeds hosting the no. 3 seeds from the opposing conferences.The higher seeds will then host the second-round playoff games.The North Conference still remains in limbo with Cedar Ridge currently leading that conference with a 2-0 record. The Timberwolves have a one game lead over Rector, which is at 1-0, while Midland, South Side-Bee Branch and Guy-Perkins are all 0-1.
