Jones, Young Lead Junior Bears Past Brinkley; Win South Title

WOODLAWN - Quarterback Grayson Jones threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Woodlawn Junior Bears wrapped up an undefeated South Conference championship with a 36-8 win over the Brinkley Junior Tigers last Friday afternoon at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.Woodlawn finished the year 6-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play.Brinkley took an early 8-0 lead when the Junior Tigers recovered a Woodlawn fumble at the Junior Bears’ 43 on the Junior Bears’ second offensive series of the game. After Miles West and Logan Doss both had stopped the Junior Tigers for losses, Brinkley was facing 3rd-and-18 when the Junior Tiger quarterback broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run. He ran in the two-point conversion as well to put Brinkley up 8-0 with 2:39 left in the opening period.Woodlawn recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt at its own 48. Eight plays later, Jones connected with Easton Franks for a seven-yard TD pass. Jones scored the conversion as well to tie the game, 8-8, at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter.The Junior Bears’ Randy Clark then stuffed the Brinkley quarterback for no gain on fourth down, giving Woodlawn possession at the Junior Tigers’ 47.  Taking over from there, Jones guided the Junior Bears on a seven-play scoring drive capped by his two-yard run with 45 seconds in the half. Carson Young added the two-point conversion to make it 16-8 at the break. Jones had four runs for 21 yards and completed a 13-yard pass to West during the drive. Young had two runs for 10 yards in the series.Woodlawn recovered an onside kick to start the second half, and on the next play, Young eluded the defensive pursuit and went 44 yards for the touchdown. Jones added the two-pointer to make it 24-8 with 7:35 left in the third. Jones then intercepted a pass at about the Woodlawn 45 on Brinkley’s next possession and returned it for a touchdown.
