WOODLAWN - A couple of miscues in the first half proved to be detrimental for the Woodlawn Junior Bears last Friday as they dropped their season finale, 28-14, to the Spring Hill Junior Bears at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
The loss spoiled what was a stellar performance by freshman fullback Ethan White, who bulled his way for 152 yards rushing on 21 carries.
The first mistake came with Woodlawn facing fourth-and-8 at the Spring Hill 38 on its opening possession. A high snap gave the visiting Junior Bears a first down at the Woodalwn 44, and on the next play, Spring Hill scored. Woodlawn answered, however, on its ensuing possession. Taking over at its own 35 after the kickoff went out of bounds, the Junior Bears marched 65 yards in eight plays before Lucas Manes scored on a nine-yard run. White powered in for the two-point conversion and Woodlawn was up 8-6 with 1:21 left in the first quarter.
After Spring Hill successfully recovered Woodlawn's ownside kick attempt, Spring Hill managed to convert on fourth-and-4 to keep the drive alive before eventually scoring on a 28-yard run. White stopped the twopoint attempt to leave Spring Hill with a 12-8 lead.
Woodlawn was on the move again on its next possession as White became a human bulldozer, driving the Junior Bears from their own 26 to the Spring Hill 31 in six plays. However, Woodlawn fumbled on the next snap and Spring Hill returned it 63 yards for a touchdown. This time the conversion pass was good to put Spring Hill up 20-8.
Spring Hill scored on the opening series of the second half to go up 28-8 after a six-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion.
Woodlawn answered with a 10-play, 66-yard drive capped by quarterback Parker Arnold pushing it across from a yard out. The conversion attempt was no good.
