WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn Junior Bears scored early and often as they hammered the out-manned Augusta Junior Red Devils, 66-16, for their first win of the year last Friday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
Woodlawn scored on its first six possessions as the Junior Bears took a 46-0 lead early in the second quarter of the non-conference game.
Junior Bears quarterback Grayson Jones went 56 yards on the second play from scrimmage for the first score of the night. Carson Young’s two-point run made it 8-0.
After Juan Dominquez came up with a fourth-down stop on the Red Devils’ first possession, Young went 26 yards for the score. His two-pointer made it 16-0.
Woodlawn’s Conner Ziegler then recovered an onside kick, and three plays later Jones scampered in for a 26-yard score. The conversion was stopped leaving it 22-0.
Wyatt Parker then recovered an Augusta fumble on the Devils’ next series, setting up a 17-yard TD by Young. Jones tacked on the two-pointer to make it 30-0.
Jones then recovered another Augusta fumble at the Red Devil 15 and Blake Heflin took it in from there on the next snap. Brody Richardson’s conversion run pushed the Woodlawn lead to 38-0.
After the Junior Bears came up with another fourth-down stop, an 18-yard run by Richardson and a 21-yard touchdown burst by Blake Heflin made it 46-0 after Heflin added the conversion.
Woodlawn’s Ross Adair recovered a Red Devil fumble on the first play of the second half with the running clock now in play. Four plays after the turnover, Young had his third TD on a 12-yard run. The two-point attempt was stopped leaving it 52-0.
Augusta, which brought 12 players, broke the shutout with a 40-yard touchdown pass on its next possession against a reserve defense. The Devils also punched in the conversion to make it 52-8.
On the ensuing kickoff, Woodlawn’s Duke Scott returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 58-8.
