Junior Bears Get Victory After Health Issue Ends Game at Lafayette County

RISON - The South Conference game between the Woodlawn Junior Bears and the Lafayette County Junior Cougars was stopped in the first quarter when a Lafayette County player had to be airlifted from the stadium after suffering what appeared to be a seizure.

The Junior Bears were up 24-0 against the outmanned Junior Cougars when the game was called.

Woodlawn Coach Doug Means said one of the Lafayette County players had to leave the game after the protective padding came off his helmet during some contact on the field. He said the player walked to the sidelines under his own power, but once he got there, went into what Means described as a seizure.

A medical helicopter was called in to transport the player for emergency treatment. Means said he spoke to the Lafayette County coaching staff Monday and they reported that the player had recovered and the episode is believed to linked to an existing health issue.

The Junior Cougars struggled to get anything going against the Junior Bears.

Lafayette County’s first possession started inside its own 5 yard line, and after three plays yielded no yards, the Junior Cougars had a short punt that was downed at their own 20. Woodlawn running back Carson Young took it into the end zone on the next play and Bentley Hoyt ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead.

The Junior Cougars’ second series didn’t go any better as two fumbled exchanges and an incomplete pass resulted in a fourth-and-2o situation from their own 17. This time, Lafayette County was able to get a punt away, but Young fielded it a the 36 and ran it back for another TD. Young also ran in the two-pointer to make it 16-0.

Lafayette County’s next three plays netted -8 yards and this time the snap got away from the punter and Woodlawn’s Juan Dominquez was there to pick it up and score on a 15-yard touchdown return. Young added the conversion to extend the lead to 24-0.

The Junior Bears ran just one offensive play in the game, that being Young’s 20-yard touchdown run.
