WOODLAWN - Griffin Manes rushed for 116 yards and scored three touchdowns, and 7th grade quarterback Bentley Hoyt had 107 yards of total offense as the Woodlawn Junior Bears blew out the Hermitage Junior Hermits, 54-6, last Friday evening in a South Conference game at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.Woodlawn improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win.The Junior Bears scored on their first six possessions with Hoyt capping the opening series with a 26-yard touchdown run. Hoyt also ran in the conversion to make it 8-0 Woodlawn with 7:24 left in the first quarter. Hoyt finished the game with three rushes for 64 yards and completed two-of-three pass attempts for another 43 yards.Hermitage answered with what would be its only score after covering 51 yards in nine plays. Woodlawn turned back the Junior Hermits’ two-point attempt to maintain an 8-6 lead with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.After Hermitage’s ensuing onside kick attempt went out of bounds, the Junior Bears needed just four plays to go 45 yards before Colton Simmons scored on a 16-yard run. Quarterback Braydon Jones then found Duke Scott in the back of the end zone on the two-point try to give Woodlawn a 16-6 lead.The Junior Bears’ Luke Heflin then recovered an onside kick, giving Woodlawn possession at its own 49. After Hoyt hit Scott for a 32-yard completion on the first play of the drive, Manes scored his first touchdown three plays later on an 11-yard run on the final snap of the first period. Hoyt’s run added two more points to extend the Junior Bears’ lead to 24-6.Manes scored Woodlawn’s next two touchdowns as well, the first on an 18-yard run with 5:03 left in the second, and the other on an 48-burst following Jones’ recovery of an onside kick.
